.
Abstract:
Zones identified as needing to be evacuated in the event of a tsunami
Red evacuation zone This is an area that is most likely to be affected by a tsunami. It includes estuaries, rivers, beaches and harbours. A tsunami of any size could cause strong currents and surges in the water.
Orange evacuation zone This area is less likely to be affected by a tsunami than the red zone. It includes low-lying coastal areas that are likely to be flooded in a large tsunami that inundates land.
Yellow evacuation zone This is an area that is much less likely to be affected than the red or orange zones, it includes areas further inland that could potentially be flooded or isolated in a worst-case tsunami scenario.
There is no one tsunami that would flood the entire orange or yellow zone – rather they are an envelope around many different possible 'worst case' tsunami scenarios. 'Worst case' scenarios are those with a 0.04% chance of happening in any one year, or less than a 1 in 20 chance of happening in someone's lifetime.
You can find out more about tsunamis on the Environment Canterbury website
Update Frequency:
As Required
Point of Contact:
Waimakariri District Council

",
